What is Eco School Programme?

The Eco School programme is a school based programme, where  the school is the entry point to promote Education for Sustainable Develobment (ESD) principles focussing all social groups as a tool  to enhance sustainable community development.

The programme is a democratic and participatory strategy that provides an excellent opportunity for learners (school and community members) to experience active citizenship in their localities.

 

What is the Eco School Programme about?

The programme is focusing on environmental education for sustainable community development in Uganda through schools.

It is promoting action based learning in primary schools to enhance pupils’ action competences.

The programme enhances social transformation and active citizenship (Attitude and behavior change) for sustainability.

 

Why the Eco School Programme in Uganda?

The constitution of the republic of Uganda (1995) under national objectives and directive principles of state policy, commits the state to promote sustainable development and public awareness of the needs to manage land, air and resources in a balanced and sustainable manner for present and future generation.

Therefore, the Eco School Programme Uganda Chapter is complimenting government’s efforts to provide quality education through promotion of environmental action based learning in primary schools as a tool for sustainable community development.

The programme equips the individual with knowledge, skills and attitudes to exploit the environment in sustainable manner.

 

Main programme interventions

  1. Re orienting the education system by introducing action based teaching methods and materials in pilot eco schools.

  2. Promoting integration of micro projects in the school curriculum to enhance action based learning.

  3. Strengthen the Eco Community School Network concept to guarantee shared principle, values and visions in society.

  4. Capacity building of the primary teachers and communities in programme thematic areas.

  5. Promotion of eco community based credit and saving schemes.

  6. Promotion of indigenous knowledge (IK) for development to enhance research and inter-generational transfer of knowledge and skills.

  7. People centered environmental policy advocacy.

  8. Forum theatre and environmental music dance and drama.
